RSHE & PSHE

Rationale

PSHE allows all children, through a variety of visual resources, discussions and whole class activities, to have a respectful, tolerant, empathic attitude to the people and world around them. The subject gives them tools to use for regulating their emotions and achieving physical and mental health. In a world where social media and online use is part of our daily lives, children also learn how to stay safe online along with other situations such as road safety and firework night. Due to the nature of PSHE lessons, communication skills and relationships are developed effectively and children are taught how to be resilient and positively face change.

Intent

Our intent is to promote protected characteristics in an age appropriate context as well as to help pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage many of the critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face as they grow up and in adulthood. By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our PSHE/RSHE scheme will tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and improve the life chances of all children including the most vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils.

Mindfulness is an aspect of the Jigsaw scheme of work we follow and through this we aim to provide them with a vital tool for life, regulating their emotions, building emotional resilience whilst enhancing their ability to focus and concentrate, both of which will help to optimise learning.

Across the course of each unit, pupils will work towards two learning intentions, one of which is based on specific PSHE learning and one based on emotional literacy and social skills. We aim to ensure that pupils leave Year 6 with the skills required to successfully live in today’s world and their next phase of education.

Implementation

The PSHE scheme of work followed is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme at the same time. Jigsaw is organised into 6 puzzles (units), with each puzzle having 6 pieces (lessons). Our new PSHE policy outlines where we have moved some lessons from the Changing Me unit from lower school to upper school. There is some degree of flexibility in planning, such as condensing units, and lessons can be adapted to the needs of the pupils in the year group or class.

The 6 Jigsaw puzzles are –

Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy Me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Long term planning is overseen by the subject leader and, in each year group, one teacher is responsible for planning of the PSHE lessons.

Within PSHE, the school live marking policy is followed and there is no formal assessment. Much of the lesson is discussion or practical activity based and works towards developing skills which can be observed in practice throughout the school day. Pupils self-assess by traffic lighting their skills progression maps.

Outside of the Jigsaw scheme, many other aspects of the school help develop well-rounded and equipped individuals; positive relationships with staff, celebration of achievements, outdoor lessons, opportunities to share pupil views, the arts such as choir, wellbeing afternoons, nurture groups and road safety lessons.

Impact

The intended impact of our PSHE teaching is to enable pupils to develop their emotional literacy and social skills, being aware of their own thoughts and feelings as they happen and developing strategies to help manage them. The purpose of RSHE is to focus on all kinds of relationships, mental health, and the integration of other communities and cultures.

The scheme of work is designed to enable skills to be acquired throughout the course of the year and be built upon as each year progresses. Each puzzle focuses on different key skills to be acquired by the end of the year, some examples are –

Being Me in My World - Recognising their own worth. Recognising that their actions have consequences. Understanding the importance of being part of a team.

Celebrating Difference - Developing empathy for others. Recognising how to appreciate the differences in people.

Dreams and Goals - Identify their own dreams for the future. Know how to overcome problems. Build resilience.

Healthy Me- Know how to keep themselves safe. Understand which foods constitute a healthy diet.

Relationships – Know how to make and develop appropriate relationships.

Changing Me – Recognise what changes they are looking forward to in their next academic year and how to manage change. Understand how their body is changing and how to deal with it.

The skills acquired are not subject specific and can be utilised throughout their school life and beyond. The intended impact is also that pupils will also have developed into well rounded individuals who are ready for the next stage in their life and education.
